Hawaii!

Filed under: Exciting @ 7:46 pm

So besides being worked in the ICU right now, I’ve been slowly uploading pics from our recent trip to Hawaii to Flickr. The bad part is that it’s quite cold here in the South Bay and it looks so warm in all the pictures. The good part is I’m reminded of how much fun we had.

We got to kayak, swim with dolphins, get a speeding ticket, climb into a volcanic crater, leave our snorkeling gear somewhere, see tiny splatters of lava, etc. It was definitely a packed week. I even had a conference to go to…

I’m slowly but surely adding more pics every day, so keep checking back. All the images were taken with either my trusty new Nikon D90 (more on that later), a Canon SD880 IS (with/without the underwater case) and our late Canon G10 (couldn’t handle the non-DSLR-ness of it).

No more Polaroid

Filed under: Whatever @ 6:58 pm

If you think about it, Polaroid pictures were the closest thing to today’s digital imaging. At the end of the year, Polaroid will no longer produce its own film. This was announce some time ago, but I just noticed it again in the news today. It’s like survival of the fittest for technology.

A Sandwich Thief

Filed under: Whatever @ 6:47 pm

I’m super annoyed that after looking forward to it all afternoon, someone stole my sandwiches and drink. Maybe they thought the “Jack” written on all three items meant cheese (never heard of a Jack cheese drink though). What irks me to no end about it is that I left it in my own department’s conference room where one of my colleagues who I’m supposed to respect and vice versa got confused about two sandwiches and a drink in the corner and took them.

Who knows, maybe they were moved somewhere else. Maybe not.

This reminds me of the Friends episode where Ross gets sent to anger management because he went ape shit after someone stole his sandwich.

Backward or Forward?

Filed under: Whatever @ 8:41 pm

I’ve been feeling like I haven’t been taking enough pictures. At first I thought it was that I just wasn’t inspired. But I got to thinking it’s also probably because I just never have my camera with me now that it’s a minimum of 3.5 lbs. just for the D70 and a lens. That and I’m just lazy. So when Canon announced their new PowerShot G10, I got a little excited. 4 years ago I was so ready to get rid of the crappy “prosumer” point and shoot camera and move up to a full-on DSLR and here I am thinking about the G10. Blah blah blah and 3 weeks later I have my new toy.

PowerShot G10 Front
PowerShot G10 Top
PowerShot G10 Back

Check out those cool rangefinder-like controls! The feel is nice too with a leather/ette thingie on the hand grip. The start-up time was unexpectedly quick; a snappy surprise. Weight-wise, the G10 is a breeze to carry. Although not as high-res as the D90’s screen, the G10 does have a higher res screen than most other point-and-shoots. Lastly, a few notable improvements from my old G3 are the built-in lens cover and 28mm wide angle. Unfortunately, the lens is slower at f/2.8.

I’m still a little conflicted though since it really does lack a lot of things, say, a new D90 would have. We’ll see how much I actually miss a DSLR. The good news is that I sold two more images recently which easily covers the G10 … or a new lens. Weird if you think about it that way: a G10 equals a lens in cost. Haha.

Dummy

Filed under: Whatever @ 10:56 pm

Check out what I saw on the way to my car tonight. At first I thought I’d inhaled too much Sevo.

:ponder:

:smack: Probably not bad though since it was probably rolling as fast as an ant can run.

As you might notice in the last picture, the dude/dudet left it in neutral!

Bad breath for days

Filed under: Whatever @ 10:39 pm

I don’t know why this is a happy smiley, but I was happy to have some fresh, spicy crawfish again. The place is called Crawdaddy and it’s in San Jose; not too far. Check out the awesome mess!

Look at the towels on all the seats and even the floor. We destroyed it! Actually the destruction was just me. One bag was booby trapped with a hole in it.

Overall, it was good, but the sauce was a tad watery. The worst part, though, was smelling it all day under my mask. :puke:

It’s official, I got my license!

Filed under: Whatever @ 8:54 pm

w00t! What a lucky day.

For the past two months, I’ve been losing sleep on the status of my application. I even tried to call but they stopped taking messages. I thought the Medical Board lost my application but, sure enough, I received an invoice for my licensing fees last week. However, it was dated June 10!

Fast forward to today and I got an email confirming my licensed status! :king:

Go find me on the Board’s website.

I Survived

Filed under: Exciting @ 11:10 pm

Yay!

I’m happy to report that I survived my first day in the OR as an anesthesia resident. And so did my patients. My poor feet endured 13 hours of standing. Those Dansko shoes are looking pretty enticing right now, but I must resist. I’m going to have to look for some comfy but still cool looking shoes though.

Congratulations to all the other people I know beginning their residencies after a long internship.

Also, I’m glad it’s summer so we can explore the Bay a little while the weather’s so nice.

Internship? Check.

Filed under: Exciting @ 12:42 am

It’s official, my final patient care duties were fulfilled at 12 MN tonight and I left the hospital a free man! It was funny though because I’ve been avoiding them all year and the resident running the ER board sees me trying to look busy and goes, “Hey Jack, are you busy?”

Me: Thinking, shit, she saw me. Saying, “Uh…no…”
Resident: “Do you want to see a patient with me?”
Me: Thinking, um…no. Saying, “Um, sure.”
Resident: “Good, it’s a vag. bleeder.”
Me: Thinking, f$%*#! Saying, “Man…thanks for the gift on my last shift.”

I guess reaching this milestone is not all positive though. It’s actually bittersweet knowing that now I have to start my real training to be a specialist and all the pressure to go along with it. Then there’s the impending pain of moving all our crap again. On top of that, being away from family and friends again. 350 mi is better than 2500 mi, though.

At least it’s still a step in the right direction and a +1 for Angeline and I. So yay! :drunk:

Interesting healthcare discussion

Filed under: Hmm @ 6:06 pm

Before I get to the real meat of this post, my last call wasn’t really my last. Funny how things work. A fellow coworker had to go on medical leave and guess who got stuck covering her ass? In the 3 days I covered, I worked 2X as much as I would’ve worked the whole week on the rotation I was on. :wallbash:

Now to the main story.

I found an interesting topic on the Anesthesia forums regarding job satisfaction. There was a member of the USAF promoting a socialized care system based on what he’d seen in the movies and his interactions with military style medicine. One post really stuck out as a well informed response and an overview of the current state of affairs in medicine today. I’ll admit it’s may come off as a tad extreme and “soapboxy” but the USAF guy was the one threatening to kill people.

Click below to read the long response.
